Building a Strengths-Based Organization

Engagement, retention, DE&I, attracting talent, and The Great Resignation.

What do all of these have in common?… A focus on people.

Putting the people of an organization ahead of the profits. The formula for profits and performance rests in the environment you create for your people.

An elite, world-class culture is crafted by providing a workplace that puts people in positions they are skilled for and passionate about while honoring each person’s unique strengths, investing in those strengths, and giving them an important mission to be part of.

Back-to-back Final Four’s with back-to-back NCAA Championship appearances.

How did a small, underdog Butler University basketball team accomplish this in 2010 & 2011?

It’s because of ‘The Butler Way.’

The Butler Way = Demands commitment, denies selfishness, accepts reality, yet seeks improvement every day while putting the team above self.

Butler Athletics has a set of values & behaviors that were in place decades before these two championship level teams and still exist now a decade after those games: Humility; Passionate; Unity; Servanthood; Thankfulness. A 6th value & behavior was added a couple years prior to the championship runs; ‘Accountability – No excuses. No explanations. How can I improve?’

There are 350 NCAA Division I basketball teams. 68 teams get invited to the ‘March Madness’ NCAA Tournament each season. Very few schools ever make it to the championship game. Butler found a way to build a program that made it two years in a row and receives invitations to the tournament often.

Building a Strengths-Based Organization

Give them an important mission

Make the positive impact of your organization far more significant than the products or services you provide. People want to be part of something bigger than themselves. Strengthen your leaders with an inspiring mission.

Create a strengths-focused workplace

When people can combine what they’re best at with what they love doing, they will consistently perform at a high level. Identify people’s strengths and invest in those strengths to enhance skill development and performance.

Expect excellence

People will rise to the occasion in certain moments. But, they will retract back to the standard performance level for the day-to-day. Craft a culture where the team standard is excellence.
